FastForward Sports Announces Triathlon Scholarship

Established in 2005, FastForward Sports is a year-round triathlon and running training group for athletes throughout the Front Range. They will provide two aspiring athletes scholarships for their spring 2008 Triathlon Training Program courtesy of 5430 Sports.

Top Ten Finishes Abound for Colorado Athletes in Kona

Several Colorado athletes claimed top ten spots at this year's Ironman World Championships. Tim DeBoom, a former two-time Ironman world champion, took fourth overall in 8:22:30. Michael Lovato, whose past Ironman victories include wins in Coeur d'Alene and Arizona, claimed ninth overall in 8:33:28. In the pro women's race, Samantha McGlone, currently residing in Colorado Springs, finished second in her first attempt in Kona. Among age-groupers, Justin Hurd of Fort Collins finished fourth in the men's 20-29 division. Jeff Kiel of Louisville and Dennis Meeker of Boulder finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the men's 35-39 division. Tim Hola of Highlands Ranch claimed eighth among men 30-34. Chris Peters finished second among men 40-44, while Michael Hagen finished second among men 45-49; both are from Colorado Springs. Simon Butterworth of Louisville finished sixth among men 60-64. For the women, Kelly Lear-Kaul of Littleton won the 35-39 division. Tracy Robertson of Colorado Springs claimed sixth among 30-34 women; and Teresa Rider of Boulder finished second among women 45-49.

5430 Long Course Triathlon

A day after the 5430 Kids Triathlon spotlighted the sport's up and coming ranks, the Boulder Triathlon Series wrapped up with its long course event. David Thompson scorched the course to lead home the pro men. Chris Leigh followed close behind in second, followed by Pete Jacobs in third. For the women, Samantha McGlone took top honors, edging out Boulder Peak champion Joanna Zeiger. Melissa Ashton finished third.

Longmont triathlete Craig Howie took third in the men's race at Ironman Lake Placid. He finished behind winner Alex Mroszoczyk-McDonald, a medical student from Burlington, Vermont, and runner-up Pierre Lavoie, Quebec’s two-time Ironman World age group champion.

Second Annual RYKA Iron Girl

Boulder residents Tanya Poel, 41, and 26-year-old Tera Moody claimed today's 5-Mile and 5K titles respectively at the second annual RYKA Iron Girl Denver 5-Mile and 5K. Poel crossed the finish line with a time of 30:41, while Moody, an accomplished athlete who has qualified for the 2008 10K Olympic Trials, broke the 5K tape with a time of 18:07.

The Northern Colorado Triathlon Series wrapped up with Loveland Lake to Lake Triathlon. Joshua Merrick and Sharon Beltrandelrio won the men and women's races, respectively.

Lovato Third in Coeur d'Alene

Boulder triathlete and former Ironman Coeur d'Alene champ, Michael Lovato, claimed a podium spot at this year's contest. Lovato clocked a time of 8:40:39 to take third in the featured men's professional race. Another former winner, Victor Zyemtsev, claimed the top spot with a time of 8:33:32. Zyemtsev was closely followed by Tom Evans, who finished second in 8:34:34.

Leigh Victorious at Buffalo Springs; DeBoom Takes Third

Chris Leigh claimed victory at this year's Buffalo Springs Lake Ironman 70.3 with a winning time of 3:55:00. Tim DeBoom took third in 3:58:20. In the women's race, Boulder's Mirinda Carfrae was runner-up to Natasha Badman. Carfrae clocked a 4:20:06, close on the heels of Badman's 4:19:02.

Cyclist Jalabert Makes Ironman Debut

Laurent Jalabert, the former pro cyclist from France who was ranked first on the UCI World ranking list between 1995 and 2000, made an impressive Ironman debut in Switzerland. As expected, he was strong on the bike, but his superb run helped him finish 22nd in a time of 9:12.30 (IM Switzerland results). Athletes also lined up in Nice on Sunday for the annual Ironman France (IM France results - PDF).

Ballengee Continues Recovery after Tragic Fall

Professional multisport athlete and adventure racer, Danelle Ballengee, continues to recover from a harrowing accident that occurred last December. During a routine trail run near her home in Moab, Ballengee slipped on black ice and fell sixty feet. She shattered her sacrum in the fall, but managed to crawl to a water hole to wait for help. Led by her dog and faithful running companion, Taz, a rescue team arrived at the scene fifty-two hours later. Ballengee continues to make progress in her recovery, but not all of her medical expenses were covered by her insurance. To help, send contributions to the Danelle Ballengee Fund at FirstBank, P.O. 5430 Sprint Triathlon

Just as summer began to heat up, the Boulder Triathlon Series kicked off with its sprint race at Boulder Reservoir. Former Olympian, Susan Williams of Littleton, outgunned Heidi Grimm and Steph Popelar for the win. Williams crossed the line in 1:15:41 to set a new course record for the women. Grimm of Colorado Springs and Popelar of Parker took second and third, respectively. In the men's race, Boulder native Cameron Dye used his swim strength to establish an untouchable lead en route to victory. Mark Van Akkeren of Boulder took second, and Craig Greenslit of Berthoud finished third. The next race in the series will be the popular Boulder Peak Triathlon on July 22.

Greeley Triathlon

Leah Larson continued her dominance in this year's Northern Colorado Triathlon Series, claiming victory number two at the Greeley Triathlon. Kirk Nelson of Longmont took the win in the men's race. The final race in the series will take place June 30 at the Loveland Lake to Lake Triathlon.

Pelican Fest Triathlon

Leah Larson of Boulder and Peter Mallett of Golden claimed wins at this year's Pelican Fest Triathlon, the first of three races in the Northern Colorado Triathlon Series. Next up is the Greeley Triathlon on June 10. The series concludes with the Loveland Lake to Lake Triathlon on June 30.

CU Third at Collegiate Nationals

Leah Larson led the University of Colorado squad at this year's USAT Collegiate Championships. Larson's 4th place paced the women to 7th on the day, while the men finished 5th. The combined efforts put CU on the podium in the team competition where the Buffaloes finished 3rd overall.

Ironman Arizona

Colorado pros filled the podium at this year's Ironman Arizona. With the win going to Rutger Beke (8:21:14), Colorado's Tim DeBoom (8:26:04) and Michael Lovato (8:37:29) filled out the top three for the men. In the women's race, Heather Gollnick (9:36:40) edged out Colorado's Joanna Zeiger (9:37:29) for the win. Katja Schumacher (9:44:14) took third.

Ironman 70.3 California

Andy Potts of Colorado Springs won this year's Ironman 70.3 California, a big victory for the Olympic-distance specialist. Boulder's Michael Lovato sprinted into 8th place, and into the money, with the fastest run split of the day. Lovato clocked a blazing 1:15:16 for the half marathon run. Perennial top age-grouper, Tim Hola, won the 30-34 men's division, and placed 24th overall. Kristin Hilger of Boulder claimed victory in the 25-29 women's division with her time of 4:49:56.
